Team Members

Chieh Li, Ed.D., Principal Investigator & Project Director

Dr. Li is an Associate Professor in the School Psychology Program of the Department of Applied Psychology at Northeastern University. She is a nationally certified school psychologist. She teaches graduate assessment, counseling, and consultation courses from a multicultural lens. As a bilingual psychologist, she writes on bilingual and bicultural issues in the field of school and counseling psychology and addresses social justice issues that multilingual students encounter. To enhance psychological well-being in the classrooms, Dr. Li has been exploring with collaborators the feasibility, efficacy, and mechanism of brief meditation. To empower minoritized youths to help themselves cope with adversities along with mental health challenges, she is working with her research team on developing culturally tailored intervention strategies and tools. Their project Preventing Depression of Chinese American Adolescents through Mobile Health Application is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).      

Dr. Li has served on professional committees at various levels (see CV). She has also served on the editorial board of multiple academic journals, including School Psychology Review, Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation, School Psychology Training and Pedagogy, and School Psychology Forum. In addition, she has reviewed manuscripts for the Journal of School Psychology, Journal of Educational Psychology, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and Bilingual Research Journal. She served as an article editor of the traditional Chinese mind-body health techniques for Sage Open

Huijun Li, Ph.D., Principal Investigator

Dr. Huijun Li is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, College of Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities at Florida A&M University. She received her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of Arizona in 2003. Dr. Li is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and Nationally Certified Youth Mental Health First Aid trainer. Before joining Florida A&M University, Dr. Li served as the Director of Multicultural Research at the Commonwealth Research Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Harvard Medical School. She has received federal and foundation grants to conduct qualitative and quantitative research on psychosocial factors related to mental health, such as culture-specific beliefs about causes of mental illness, stigma, and barriers to services, among individuals from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Li has been also receiving federal funding to study risk factors and symptoms of youth at clinically high risk for psychotic disorders. Dr. Li serves on the Editorial Board of the Asian Journal of Psychiatry and the Editorial Advisory Board of Psychology in the Schools. She has also served as Research Committee Chair of the Florida Association of School Psychologists, scientific reviewer for the National Institute of Health, and lead program reviewer of the National Association of School Psychologists. Dr. Li actively conducts psychoeducational trainings on youth mental health in local communities. She served as an expert on youth mental health on the local ABC TV news after the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting incident. Dr. Li is the author or co-author of peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, translated books, and conference presentations.

Shengli Dong, Ph.D., Principal Investigator

Dr. Shengli Dong is an Associate Professor of Psychological and Counseling Services in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at FSU. His current research focuses on workplace and academic accommodations, transition issues to work and postsecondary education for youth with disabilities, mindfulness in counseling, multicultural counseling, and social justice issues. 

Dr. Dong serves as an editorial board member for several flagship journals in his research areas such as Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, Journal of Rehabilitation, and the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation. Furthermore, he serves on the Council on Diversity and Equity and Research Committee for the National Council of Rehabilitation Education. In addition, he is one of the founding members of Asian American Rehabilitation Association. Dr. Dong received the Sylvia Walker National Multicultural Award 2020 from the National Rehabilitation Association.

Tad Hirsch, Ph.D., Co-Investigator

Tad Hirsch is a Professor of Art + Design at Northeastern University, where he conducts research and creative practice at the intersection of design, engineering, and social justice. He is currently developing automated assessment and training tools for addiction counseling and mental health; prior work has tackled such thorny issues as human trafficking, environmental justice, and public protest.

Hirsch’s creative work has been exhibited at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) Karlsruhe, The New Museum, The Aldridge Contemporary Art Museum, and MassMoca, and has been featured at international festivals including ISEA and Ars Electronica. He has received awards and commissions from the IxDA, IDSA, Prix Ars Electronica, Design Ignites Change, and Rhizome.org.

Alisa Lincoln, Ph.D., M.P.H., Co-Investigator

Dr. Lincoln is a Professor of Sociology and Health Sciences at Northeastern University, and is Director of the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research (formerly the IUHR) at the Bouvé College of Health Sciences. Dr. Lincoln has expertise in sociology and public mental health with a focus on social-cultural factors (e.g., social exclusion and discrimination) as contributors to mental health. Working with colleagues throughout CSSH, the university, and the community, she leads the college’s efforts to support and expand our research mission. This includes supporting activities related to grant and fellowship applications and awards, working with our research centers and institutes, and developing and supporting multidisciplinary cross-college collaborations.

Justin Chen, M.D., M.P.H., Research Consultant

Dr. Chen is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and vice-chair of Health Justice at Weill Cornell Medicine I NewYork-Presbyterian. Dr. Chen serves as our team consultant, bringing expertise in clinical intervention with Chinese Americans with depression and/or cross-cultural challenges. He has worked at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Kiki Bekkum

Hello everyone, my name is Kiki Bekkum and I am a master’s student majoring in counseling psychology at Northeastern University. I graduated from UMass Dartmouth in 2022 with two B.A.s in Psychology, Health and Society, and a minor in Aging and Health. I am working on the RRE section of our current projects, and a manuscript in the works.

Hello! My name is Jaimie and I am an undergraduate student at Northeastern majoring in Health Sciences and Business Administration on the Pre-Medical Track. I am currently working on the RRE section of our current projects and outreach within the Boston community.

Molly McGhee

My name is Molly McGhee, and I am a second-year graduate student in Northeastern University’s Master’s in Counseling Psychology program. As a lab member, I am surveying Chinese American adolescents’ perception of the cultural and developmental sensitivity of pre-existing online resources for youth depression.

Emma Shek

Hi all! My name is Emma Shek. I am a fourth-year data science and health science major. I have been with this lab since the spring of 2023. Since then I have helped with a variety of tasks but my primary interest is in data management. I currently support the outreach efforts for the study group.

Hi! I am Qiuxi and I am a Northeastern Applied Psychology master program student. She is currently working on a manuscript about the analysis of cultural review of online resources for depression prevention and intervention for Chinese American adolescents.
